Prayers Requests!

At Huntertown UMC we know prayer is important to all that we do.  If you would like to receive, send prayer requests, share a praise or you would like to be put on the list to receive requests by e-mail, please send a request to prayerrequest@huntertownumc.org.

The Third Place

In July 2006 we opened The Third Place. In studies of our culture our homes are often defined as our "first place". Our place of employment becomes our "second place". And the "third place" is the place that we develop relationships and make friends - a place we hope to encounter Jesus in our lives as we live with others.

So, what does that mean? It means it's a place for events - like Pickleball, Zumba, Holy Yoga, kids' sporting events, Vacation Bible School, young adult gatherings, adult sport leagues, community association gatherings, weddings, family parties, food bank distribution, concerts, and more!! If you are interested in renting the facility, you can download this form and bring it into the office or you can contact our Third Place Facility Manager Sherry Karst, at sherry.karst@huntertownumc.org.

Take a few minutes to get to know our staff!

  • Pastor Greg Hiatt

Hi, I'm glad you are taking some time to meet our staff! My name is Greg and I am the Lead Pastor of HUMC. Phonetically speaking, my role as "lead" pastor would be to be 'heavy" handed or be "weight" to drag everybody down. As 'lead' pastor, my role is to be out front inviting the congregation to 'come follow' me as we journey to become the church Christ calls us to be. Actually, my desire is to lead by walking with, helping us all to walk toward that deeper relationship with Christ. I would invite you to come walk with us!

I am husband of one, father of four, grandfather of four. I enjoy camping, travel, reading, working around the house and walking the dogs. My passion is people and I love the church. Great days are when I am privileged to participate in life change (i.e. salvation, growth, discovery, healing, support, prayer...) Greater days are when it's happening all the time.

Hope you have read enough to be curious. I would love to meet you soon!

    Pastor Greg

  • PASTOR Gabrielle Ginder

It’s hard to believe that I have been at HUMC since 1990! It continues to be an amazing journey to see both the church and myself change and grow over the years. I love this church and community – and continue to

see God’s hand in growing us closer to Him each day. I am totally sold out on relational ministry – I think when we ‘do life’ together it is what the church should be about. . . spending time together, investing in one another’s lives, sharing together, and more. I help launch church wide ministries that provide different avenues for people to connect with one another and with Christ. One of the key ways that happens, we believe, is in small groups. So the wider variety of small groups and more people involved the better!

I have had some exciting changes in my life this year. I am officially a pastor and appointed to HUMC! I have also begun seminary and I am an online student at United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio! I am only three weeks in and already am learning so much!!

My role is varied and I love the fact that I get to do something new everyday. Besides overseeing our small groups, I work with church wide ministries and help resource our adult ministries, you can find me visiting,

meeting with leaders, preaching, planning events, and spending time with people!

I am the ‘East Coast’ representative on staff. I was born in New York City and grew up in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area. I have a B.A. from Boston College and an M.A. in Communication from Penn State University.

My husband Park and I have been married for 27 years. He is the Principal at Homestead High School. We have four children: Cameron (25) who is currently a third year law student at William and Mary. He is married to our beautiful daughter-in-law Sarah who is a first grade teacher. Our daughter Kyle (24) is married to our awesome son-in-law Josh. Kyle is launching her own business (she does invitations and cards and Christmas cards, etc). Josh is an 8th grade science teacher. Tanner (22) is in his senior year at Indiana University studying Elementary Education. He just spent this entire past summer in the Dominican Republic with Go Ministries. Mallory (19) is in her second years at Ball State and is an RA. She continues to pursue her love of music.

I love to read – mostly non-fiction, culture, leadership, and church growth books. I love listening to ESPN radio in the morning. And I love to listen to podcasted sermons. If you ever have any questions about the church don't hesitate to contact me!

  • Deb Podgorny

    Children's Ministry Director

I came to Indiana and HUMC in October 2010. I was born and raised in Bryan, Ohio and lived in Northwest Ohio all my life until God moved me. Jeremiah 29:11 tells us God has a plan for our lives, a plan to prosper, not to harm us. God gave me the wonderful gift of my husband, Jack. He brought me to HUMC and has now blessed me with the opportunity to serve your children. I am beyond EXCITED!!

Our children are the seeds of our faith journey. To nurture those seeds, I feel, we must dedicate careful thought and have heartfelt enthusiasm to disciple and reach not only the children in our church but also in our community.

1 Timothy 4: 12 says "Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity." The Holy Spirit dwells in our children. Young people CAN set an example, given the right tools. I hope to nurture those tools.

My desire is to show the love of Jesus to all the children God places in my path. I truly value the small part He has given me in their faith journey.

One of my favorite quotes concerning children is from Wess Stafford, president of Compassion International. "When God brings a child across your path, even for a minute, it may well be a Divine appointment".

Please feel free to contact me deb.podgorny@huntertownumc.org

  • Stephanie Howard

    Preschool Director

Stephanie has been a part of Huntertown United Methodist Church for 9 years. Most recently she was the Children’s Ministry Coordinator before moving into the Preschool Director role in February 2012. The Preschool has always held a special place in her heart and was her first introduction into serving at Huntertown United Methodist Church.

Stephanie holds an Associate of Applied Science in Elementary Education from Ivy Tech, Fort Wayne. She has been involved with Big Brothers Big Sisters of NE Indiana and volunteers with the children’s ministry at Huntertown United Methodist Church.

Stephanie and her husband, Andy, have 2 daughters, Kailyn (4) and Kinley (2). She enjoys reading, crafting, spending time with friends and family, taking trips to Wrigley Field in Chicago with Andy, story time with Kailyn and snuggling Kinley.

  • Karen Baker

    Office Manager

I came to HUMC two years ago with 25 years of secretarial experience and last year I began the position of office manager. I love interacting with people who come in and out of the church all during the week. I am amazed to watch them faithfully serving God in how they so willingly volunteer and care for one another.

Bert and I have been married for 36 years, sometimes it seems like such a short time and has gone so very fast. Though once in a great while it seems like it’s been forever. We have 3 grown children & 6 grandchildren! Bert and I LOVE traveling and camping, then traveling some more! I enjoy reading, gardening, and spending time with family & friends.

The mission trip to Zambia, Africa in 2005 was one of the greatest blessings in my life—it’s something I would love to do again. I really enjoy hearing the updates on how God has been working there over the past few years.

I am excited to be a part of a church which reaches out to not only each other but to others in the community. HUMC is the best place for me to feel connected first to God and then to family & church family.

  • Cheryl Degler

    Ministries Coordinator

I have worked at HUMC for over three years! I coordinate adult ministries in the church with Gabrielle Ginder. I have a passion for getting people connected to each other and to God through HUMC. I love the people here and I am excited for the growth in our lives.

My husband and I were married at HUMC in 1992. We have been a regular part of HUMC since 2006. We have three children Tony (27) who is married to Cathy and they have our first and most adorable granddaughter, Addison! Dusty (20) is in college at Ivy Tech, studying Hospitality Management. Our daughter Makayla (19) graduated from Carroll High School and works at a day care center in Fort Wayne and will start college in the Fall.

My hobbies are gardening, reading, camping, knitting and painting! I currently lead a small group that meets on Wednesday evenings!

Through God, I feel protected, loved, and guided. This is the security and confidence I have looked for my entire life. I encourage you to consider seeking the Lord if you are still struggling with finding purpose, strength, happiness, direction, and peace in your life. Huntertown UMC has been instrumental in helping me grow in my faith.

  • Sherry Karst

Facility Manager at the Third Place

I have been blessed with a wonderful family—my birth family, my husband Rick, a grown son and two step-children. We discovered HUMC about seven years ago seeking the “comfort & warmth of a ‘home’... our church family.”

Being the Facility Manager at the Third Place seems very natural to me for two main reasons, I love to organize events and am filled with joy while everyone is laughing and having great conversations. Most of all, God has a mission for the Third Place and I am so honored that He has given me the opportunity to be a part of this.

There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.

    1 Corinthians 12:5

  • Kelly Messman

Kelly has literally grown up in this church. In fact, her dad was the custodian at HUMC for years and you could find Kelly and her siblings, when they were little kids, running around the church and helping their dad.

Kelly is married to Bob and they have two daughters, Madison who is a sophomore in college and Morgan who is an 8th grader at Carroll Middle School. Kelly and Bob enjoy following their kids sporting events and spending time with family.

  • Maxine Potter

    Financial Secretary

Someone has to count all those pennies, nickels, and dimes that precious little hands place so carefully in the offering plate each Sunday morning….and, for some time now I have been that person. Along with my faithful helpers, each Monday morning is spent taking care of what our church family offers to God.

I became a member of HUMC in May 1989 and have been the financial secretary since August of 1994. I have three grown children and spend my free time reading, playing cards, and working crossword puzzles. HUMC is a great church, and this is where I want to belong!
